Failures & Lessons

Failures & Lessons:

I wanted to make Bubble Bars; gosh so many fun sounding recipes and adorable molds to put the product in, who could resist?  Season is Autumn (Fall) and of course Halloween & Thanksgiving are rapidly approaching ... So I took out my really cute funky faced pumpkin silicon molds and away i went lol ...

Silly me ... my first boo-boo: putting weensy bits of Mica into the little facial cavities of the funky pumpkins ... The mica sticks to the silicon and is a bitch to wash out. Scrub Scrub Scrub ... But that came later.

Gathering up all the ingredients to make 12 Bubble Bars included:
Baking Soda
SLSA (not salsa ha ha ha)
Cream of Tartar
Cornstarch
Tapioca Starch (or Dry Flo cuts greasy feeling)
Liquid Glycerin
Fragrance Oils / Essential Oils
Liquid Color
Micas / Pigments
Grapeseed Oil (my choice - you can use any carrier oil)

So first you mix up the dry ingredients but don't add the Dry Flo or Tapioca Starch just yet:

CAUTION: SLSA is not pleasant to breathe, so keep pets and kiddies out of the room, wear a face mask so you don't breathe it in (tickles my throat) I have to wear glasses anyway but you can wear goggles if you want. NO A/C or fans blowing please!

Then add the Grapeseed Oil (or other carrier oil of your choice) to the Dry Flo ... mix that up with spatula. Then add that to the Dry Ingredients ...

Mix that all up hand. THEN add your liquid glycerin to that mixture .... and mix that all up hand.

Hand mosh it up nicely nice ...
Once it is the consistency of dough, you can add your aromas and colors. I like to mix my dry colors with a bit of carrier oil so that it is easier to mix into whatever it is I'm making.

When your dry colors are mixed, scrap it all into the dough like product and squish squish squish!!!

I liked the shimmery bronze mica effect but my funky pumpkins needed some orange so I squirted in some liquid Orange mainly because I don't have any orange mica or pigment. The dough was now the color I wanted it to be! So into the waiting funky pumpkin molds :)

Who agrees with me that waiting for your products to be ready is nerve wracking!! You really want to see what you've created but experience teaches NOT to be too impatient.

And so I waited about 16hrs before unmolding. I have to wonder ... had I waited longer would the results have been the same?

CRAP
So not only did I learn NOT to ever put powder colors like Micas & Pigments into the cavities of my molds - in this case the eyes noses and mouths of my funky pumpkins - I also learned more patience AND that sometimes a recipe is not meant to be molded.
This recipe was actually for a log, rolled using a bit of wax paper and then cut into 1" rounds.

I think I'll go back to the kitchen and begin again ... Now that's called an oxymoron and boy do I feel like one!!
